A critical humidity threshold for monsoon transitions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Monsoon systems around the world are governed by the so-called moisture-advection feedback. Here we show that, in a minimal conceptual model, this feedback implies a critical threshold with respect to the atmospheric specific humidity qo over the ocean adjacent to the monsoon region. If qo falls short of this critical value qc o , monsoon rainfall over land cannot be sustained. Such a case could occur if evaporation from the ocean was reduced, e.g. due to low sea surface temperatures. Within the restrictions of the conceptual model, we estimate qc o from present-day reanalysis data for four major monsoon systems, and demonstrate how this concept can help understand abrupt variations in monsoon strength on orbital timescales as found in proxy records.

Basic mechanism for abrupt monsoon transitions.
Monsoon systems influence the livelihood of hundreds of millions of people. During the Holocene and last glacial period, rainfall in India and China has undergone strong and abrupt changes. Though details of monsoon circulations are complicated, observations reveal a defining moisture-advection feedback that dominates the seasonal heat balance and might act as an internal amplifier, leading to ...

OBJECTIVES Aedes mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting the dengue virus. The mosquito lifecycle is known to be influenced by temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity. This retrospective study was planned to investigate whether climatic factors could be used to predict the occurrence of dengue in East Delhi. METHODS The number of monthly dengue cases reported over 19 years was obtain...
متن کاملAnnual Cycles of Tropospheric Water Vapor
To understand better the annual cycles of atmospheric humidity, radiosonde data were used to create climatologies of temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and precipitable water in the lower troposphere for 56 locations around the world for the period 1973-1990. On the basis of the annual ranges of relative humidity at the surface and at the 850, 700, and 500 mbar levels and the ratio of t...

Instead of going into the physical detail of the pre-monsoon thunderstorms of north eastern India, a mathematical study has been done to discern the relative importance of some prominent surface parameters namely, surface temperature, relative humidity and air-pressure, in creating severe thunderstorms over the aforesaid region. The dataset associated with this weather phenomenon has been explo...
متن کاملValidation of ground-based microwave radiometer data and its application in verifying atmospheric stability over Mahbubnagar during 2011 monsoon and post-monsoon seasons
Atmospheric instabilities, mainly convection, depend on temperature distribution and moisture availability. The development of convection can often lead to the formation of clouds and precipitation, release of latent heat, etc. The initiation or development of instabilities has to be studied in detail with high-resolution, ground-based instruments such as ground-based microwave radiometric meas...
